I don’t usually go for titles that fall under the Romance category but having not known that when I checked this out AND remembering how much I liked reading Center’s How To Walk Away, I decided to go ahead with it. I’m glad. Center writes with wit and heart. And I think much like a person needs a little romcom once in a while, a person needs a little light hearted and uplifting story of romance one in a while, too! But I’ll stress this story is not all fluff and one plot point here is very timely and heavy which the reader learns about quickly enough. Sam is a librarian working at a Galveston school where the staff is close, quirky, and dedicated. When their beloved principal Max dies unexpectedly, the douchebag of the town takes over the school board and hires someone to takes Max’s place. Duncan, the new principal, turns out to be someone Sam knew from the last school she worked at but is now a person that she barely recognizes. Where he used to be the picture of liveliness he is now severe. Not only that but he seems hellbent on changing everything about their idyllic, cozy, nurturing little school. Sam and her colleagues/friends mean to stop him. Katherine Center drops in wonderful little life lessons without being preachy, like writing in characters that learn to seek out joy amongst heartbreak. Is there some predictability here? Yes. Are there some stereotypes here? Yes. With that being said this is still a good book that felt very gratifying to read.
