Wow, this book was like gut punch, very powerful and painful. Yet this beautifully written novel was a story from which I could barely walk away for the two days it was in my hands. Tommy Orange writes a story of twelve different people coming together for a powwow held at the stadium in Oakland, California. Their lives are all intertwined in ways that many of them are unaware. There is a plan underway to rob the powwow of its prize money which eventually comes to a heart wrenching, breathless conclusion at the end of the book. The author deftly describes the experiences of Native Americans living in urban areas in modern times while inserting history lessons of what actually happened to native people in our nation when white people came. This book was a selection for “Fox Cities Reads” as part of the Fox Cities Book Festival for 2022. At times excruciating but always compelling, this book is something I would recommend to all Americans.
