The Islanders by Meg Mitchell Moore

Three strangers are spending the summer on a small island off the coast of Massachusetts. One, Joy, actually lives there and is a single mother of a teen girl trying to make a go of owning a coffee/bake shop amidst newly arrived competition. Lu is a wife and mother of two small boys who is struggling with the role she perceives as prescribed to her. Anthony has come to the island with the intent of hunkering down away from the disgraceful attention from which he is fleeing on the mainland. Each of these characters carries the burdens of their lives (alas, don’t we all) and must navigate through personal revelations as their paths intersect. This author is new to me and I loved how she deftly exposed the secrets and vulnerabilities of the characters all while building tension. It reminded me of a Liane Moriarty novel which is a good thing!
