When I first started this book I wasn’t so sure I would like it. I was wrong! A story about two couples of which the men are co pastors of a Presbyterian church in New York City in the 1960s didn’t seem like it was going to be my cup of tea but the author’s emotional depth of writing kept me going. The novel crosses decades and tells of how each person in the foursome is raised, how the couples meet, and how they are all brought together in life. The husbands immediately complement each other in their ministerial styles and in their personalities but not the wives. The women couldn’t be more different! But as the story and years unfold each grows to respect, value and appreciate the other’s differences and eventually forge a deep friendship. Throughout their lives, their struggles and challenges make them question everything about their faith or lack of faith. I like how the book addresses the existence of God through the life experiences and interactions of the characters. A worthy read especially since it was randomly plucked off the library shelf!
