Saving Grace by Jane Green

"How do you change if you have no awareness?" Toward the end of the novel, this is the question the main character asks herself. Grace Chapman is married to a famous novelist and from the outside they appear to live a charmed life. Extremely wealthy and famous, Grace ignores the temper tantrums and silent treatments that her husband Ted treats her to continually.

When they lose their trusted and beloved assistant, they hire Beth, a seemingly unassuming, trustworthy, if dowdy woman to take over running the household and being Ted's right hand person. It's a little predictable when Beth turns out to be a sociopath, so I don't feel this is a spoiler, but it's chilling, nonetheless. Transforming into a temptress to take over not only Grace's marriage, but her career and entire life, Beth manages to convince not only everyone in Grace's circle that she is unstable but Grace herself.

It is only when Grace hits rock bottom due to Beth's machinations that she finds herself again. Flying home to her native England she reconnects with people that used to be dear to her and finally feels safe. And when she asks herself "how do you change if you have no awareness?", that is the turning point from which she can start over.

This book is a page turner! Easy to read and satisfying, especially as you see Grace coming into her own against the antagonist Beth.
