One Step Too Far by Lisa Gardner

Is it Survivability or Adaptability that will save you? Frankie Elkin is about to find out as she impulsively decides to join a volunteer rescue mission into the wilderness of Wyoming. Five years previously, a group of young men had set out on a camping trip to celebrate one of their bachelor parties. Five left but only four of them stumbled out with a confused drunken story of what went down. The area is huge, daunting, and dangerous. The missing man, Timothy, is now presumed dead but his grieving father organizes an expedition every year to try and find his remains and bring him home.

To say that Frankie doesn't quite know what she is getting into is an understatement. A recovered alcoholic, she has wounds and losses of her own and has trouble sitting still with her own demons. She spends her whole life in motion and has devoted it to helping others find their missing loved ones which she researches on online forums.

The volunteer recovery team is made up of Timothy's father Martin, Bob the Bigfoot hunter, Nemeth the local hiking guide, Luciana and her trained rescue dog, the other groomsmen that were a part of the original bachelor/camping party, and Frankie who is the most inexperienced of them all. As they trek deeper and deeper into the wilds and off the grid it becomes clear that someone is trying to sabotage their efforts. The group must now survive not only the elements but also something more sinister: being hunted. The question is who is trying to hurt their efforts and why? The tension builds as the hikers must fight to get through the dire obstacles set before them.

This action-packed adventure thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat as it also keeps you guessing. I loved Frankie as the protagonist. Her character is flawed and raw, but smart and lovable at the same time. She kept me rooting for her and engaged in this mystery which also has a lot of heart. I hadn't read any of Lisa Gardner's books before this but now I will. This was a good one!
