Marrying The Ketchups by Jennifer Close

If you want an absolutely HILARIOUS read, along with amazingly drawn characters and a captivating story, then this book is for you. The Sullivan family own and run a long standing Chicago restaurant that each family member has worked at one time or another. When sisters Jane and Gretchen each go through a tumultuous breakup, they find themselves moving back to Oak Park and to the heart of the family - Sullivan’s Restaurant. Their cousin Teddy and father Charlie are doing their best to keep the restaurant successful amongst trendy nearby breweries and the like. The story goes between big family dinners and each family member’s current drama - I could hardly put this book down. I was howling with laughter at Jane’s description of her suburb’s little girl’s lavish birthday parties and Teddy’s musings that most teen girls are terrifying. Right down to the phrases used by the characters (Gretchen being “stoned to the bejesus”) I was often laughing out loud while reading. It’s clear that the author injects her personal politics throughout the book but that may be something each reader needs to decide if they mind. I absolutely love how Jennifer Close writes - most definitely one of my favorite authors! Loved this.
