Ill Will by Dan Choan. Dustin is a psychologist living in Cleveland, when he learns that his brother Rusty has been released from prison. In the 1980’s, Rusty was convicted of killing their parents due to the accusations made by Dustin and his cousin. This happened amidst the swirling “satanic panic” of the 1980’s. At the same time Dustin has a patient that has been telling him about a series of drowning deaths of drunk college boys. Dustin and his patient embark on an investigation of the deaths which crosses professional boundaries and puts Dustin’s family in danger. This is a well written, intelligent novel of suspense.
The Love of My Life by Rosie Walsh. This novel is a love story as well as a suspenseful twisty tale. Emma is living a happy life as a marine biologist, wife to a wonderful man and mother of a precious toddler. But Emma sometimes has “dark times” and needs to go off and spend time by herself. We soon learn that everything Emma has been telling her husband is a lie. The truth of her past slowly comes out and Emma is at risk of losing everything that her life has become. This book displays the resiliency of people’s hearts in complicated and painful situations.
The Party Crasher by Sophie Kinsella. Need a fun, light read that still has heart and soul? Sophie Kinsella is good at that! Effie is our protagonist and has fallen out with her dad and his glamorous, annoying girlfriend. When they have a party at the home where she grew up Effie decides to sneak in and take a family treasure before they sell the house. Her plan is to get in and get out but as she is sneaking around and hiding she overhears irresistible conversations and secrets. Effie also realizes two of her ex boyfriends are in attendance and this all makes it very hard for her to actually leave! A fun romp with a lot of heart and spirit!
Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. Franny Stone is living in a future where the animals are disappearing from Earth. She leaves her life behind to go to Greenland to follow the last arctic terns as they go on their final migration to Antarctica. Franny talks her way on to a fishing boat for the journey and we learn more about her past. It becomes clear that Franny has dark secrets that she is outrunning as well as chasing the birds. A chilling ode to the state of our planet as well as a reminder that there is hope even in the most dire of situations.
