Wouldn’t it be nice if the ghosts of people we’ve love and lost could come and visit us? This is one of the plot devices that Lockhart uses and it works. Although Family of liars is a prequel to what happens in We Were Liars (which I wrote about in “May Picks” of this blog) the latter should be read first! In this novel, the Sinclair sisters are teens and spending the summer on their parents private island off the coast of Massachusetts. Carrie, Penny, and Bess along with their parents are grieving their ten year old sister Rosemary, who drowned the summer before. But an element of fun, excitement, and danger comes to the island when their cousin Yardley arrives bringing three teen boys in tow. Carrie ends up falling for one of the boys, nicknamed Pfeff, but soon comes to the realization that he is rather a cad and fraternizing with younger sister Penny as well. Throughout the book Carrie is visited by the ghost of her younger sister Rosemary and also must work through family secrets she becomes privy to that summer. When Carrie’s jealousy and rage towards her sister Penny and Pfeff consume her and lead to a catastrophic event, she AND her sisters must bury it deep (in true Sinclair fashion) to carry on.
