Zero Days is classic Ruth Ware: thrilling, quick-reading excitement. Jacintha Cross (Jack) is a security specialist and a penetration tester. Her husband Gabe is a tech security assessor. Companies hire the duo to evaluate how strong they are. Jack physically breaks into the bulding to find their weaknesses and Gabe tries to hack into their database to look for information trails.
While doing their job at a London company one night, Jack gets caught and taken into custody by police. Not able to reach anyone by phone (including Gabe) to vouch for her, Jack finally calls upon her abusive ex-boyfriend cop who confirms she's legit and Jack gets home by 4 am. There she discovers Gabe dead with his throat cut.
To her increasing alarm, it seems the police suspect Jack because she is the spouse and her timeline of that night doesn't add up. While in police custody, Jack decides to flee so she can find out who really killed her husband.
Now wanted, Jack becomes more and more desperate as she uncovers a plot that looks like it was meant to set her up for her husband's murder. Trekking across London and beyond, Jack takes on a harrowing and dangerous mission to find her husband's killer and to prove herself innocent. Burrowing ever further into a securities underworld where people are willing to protect their assets at all costs, Jack doesn't know who to trust and who can help her.
Adept at writing suspense, Ruth Ware does not disappoint with Zero Days. It's a fun, exciting read that had me turning the pages quickly. I give this a 4/5.
