What Have You Done? is a perfect who-done-it to curl up with in the deepest, coldest months of winter. This hard-to-put-down thriller is what this reader has come to expect from the talented Shari Lapena.
Farmer Roy is driving his tractor on the edge of his field when he spots a cluster of turkey vultures. When he scares them away, he discovers the body of local high school student, Diana Brewer. By all accounts, Diana was a responsible, kind, high-achieving, popular seventeen-year-old. So who could want her dead?
Through various points of view, readers are introduced to suspects in the small Vermont town where Diana lived. Was it Cameron, Diana's controlling boyfriend with whom she had a fight the night she was murdered? Was it Joe Prior, the creepy older guy who would come into Diana's workplace to bother her? Was it Brad Turner, Diana's running coach and gym teacher about whom Diana had complained to the principal that he had sexually harassed her?
Lapena gives Diana a voice by her character's presence literally hovering from above watching the events that take place after she was murdered (a la The Lovely Bones), to great effect.
Shari Lapena's crisp, straight-forward writing and strong character development give this novel intrigue and depth. I loved this quick, spine-chilling mystery and it gets five out of five stars.
