Becky's Great Book Reviews The Coworker by Freida McFadden

Becky Moe

Freida McFadden really churns them out and has gotten so popular for a reason. The Coworker is another fun, twisty thriller, just like McFadden's Housemaid novels.

Dawn Schiff is an odd duck. She likes her desk arranged just so, and all her meals are uniform in color. Dawn has trouble reading other people's expression, is obsessed with turtles, and comes across as unusual. An accountant for Vixed Industries, a cosmetics company, she's just trying to fit in with her co-workers, namely beautiful, well-liked Natalie Farell. Readers learn this through Dawn's emails to her best friend Mia and to her boss, Seth.

The novel's alternating point of view comes from Natalie. When Dawn uncharacteristically does not show up for work one day, Natalie becomes concerned and goes to Dawn's apartment. She quickly realizes something is wrong as Dawn's apartment contains broken glass and a lot of blood. That on top of a phone call with Dawn's voice uttering "help me" turn Dawn's disappearance into an investigation.

McFadden deftly doles out bits of information, as well as other characters, keeping readers guessing about who really is the bad guy. An engaging mystery and a quick read, Freida McFadden's The Coworker gets four stars out of five.
