Becky's Great Book Reviews Breaking the Dark by Lisa Jewell

Apologies to Marvel fans out there, but the ONLY reason I reached for this novel is because it was written by Lisa Jewell, one of my favorite authors. Not knowing anything at all about the Marvel universe, I can honestly say that I am none the wiser after reading this. Marvel character-knowledge notwithstanding, this was well-written and had a good plot.

Jessica Jones, the protagonist of Breaking the Dark, has powers. What I gathered from the book is that she can move at lightening speeds and is very strong. Working as a private investigator in New York City, Jessica gets hired by a wealthy divorced woman, Amber Randall. Amber's teenage twins are acting very strangely since returning from their annual summer visit with their father in England: they look different, act different, and talk different. Like glossed-over versions of themselves.

Jessica gets to work following them, hiring a teenage assistant to help, and eventually travelling to England to look into the twins' father and the village where they stayed. What follows is a convoluted but interesting plot about an immortal woman, her blood-drinking husband, their brilliant but ditzy son, quantum physics, and the dangerous woman that attaches herself to the son. This woman, named Polly, has ambitions to take over the world through secretly bizarre beauty products marketed on Instagram. It would seem laughable if it weren't so plausible.

I loved the Dorian Gray references, and the storyline and characters kept my interest. There are so many Lisa Jewell books that are amazing - Then She Was Gone and Invisible Girl possibly being my favorite and would highly recommend!

Breaking the Dark contained references to Jessica Jones's past tribulations and exploits, but to this reader they didn't add anything of value to the novel. I still give this book three stars out of five, because Jewell's writing is so good. I will always reach for a new Lisa Jewell. https://youtube.com/shorts/3-DXu8Lo9pw?si=VRbR-0dFJ9W_zuBM
