Peter Swanson is a skillful writer of the atmospheric, creepy mysteries. His newest, A Talent for Murder fits the bill for a great thriller and it's a page-turner.
What if you started to suspect your newish husband might be a serial killer? Martha Peralta's husband Alan travels to teacher conferences to sell novelty items, and she begins to notice that every time he is gone a death in the area coincides with his trip. Not knowing where to turn for help, she calls upon an old friend from graduate school, Lily. Lily has helped Martha in the past when she got involved with a dangerous man and Martha is hoping Lily can help her now.
Lily becomes a key player in this novel as she methodically tracks down Martha's husband and learns that there is more going on that anyone could guess. The twists keep coming in this fast-paced story and the tension builds wonderfully. There's a chilling fascination in the idea of pure evil being the only motivation for some people.
Character development was great (especially with Martha's character), right up until Swanson pulls characters and references from previous novels and then it felt a little confusing, even from this reader who has devoured every one of Swanson's books. That being said, I would still read anything by Peter Swanson. I loved this quick-read and it felt perfect for October! I give this novel four stars out of https://youtube.com/shorts/2xKFzoWWXAk?si=i08pPP3dQ5J7NEgP
