American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

From the very first heart pounding opening pages of this novel I was drawn in and needed to know the end. Lydia is living in Acapulco when her entire family, except for her eight year old son, is shot down by a drug cartel seeking to exact revenge on Lydia’s journalist husband. Lydia and her son Luca then need to go on the run so as not to be killed themselves by the cartel. Leaving everything behind they set off for El Norte and thus starts their absolutely harrowing journey towards the United States. Along the way Lydia and Luca band with other migrants heading for the border. They all must scrabble for their survival while dodging corrupted officials and cartel-involved individuals who might be on the lookout for Lydia and her son. Battling the elements, evil-doers, transportation challenges, and terror Lydia, Luca and the others bravely make their way to America.
