I feel like I lost touch with an old friend and now, many years later, I’m rediscovering the charms of spending time with her again. I couldn’t get enough of Marian Keyes books in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. There were a couple books after that time that in my humble opinion didn’t hold up to the likes of Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married, Angels, Is There Anybody Out There, Or Rachel’s Holiday. Well, Rachel Walsh is back and am I glad! The whole Walsh family is present in this novel with their usual high hilarity and warmth, just like in so many of Keyes novels. Rachel is a recovered alcoholic who relishes her job as an addictions counselor and is happy with her current boyfriend. Rachel is dedicated to her sobriety and finds satisfaction in gardening and online shopping for purses and tennis shoes. The past comes back in the form of ex husband Luke to stir up painful memories and we learn of the awful circumstances around their breakup. Will the memories of her past young adult life throw Rachel out of sync with her recovery and her current love life? Set in Keyes’s Ireland this sexy book sparkles with wit, laugh-out-loud scenarios and poignancy. I would recommend reading Rachel’s Holiday before this one but it’s not necessary.
